Better Off Zed – USA, 2018

‘A relationship movie with bite’

Better Off Zed is a 2018 American comedy horror feature film produced and directed by Travis Stevens from a screenplay by Amy Tofte, based on Stevens’ storyline. The Butcher Bird Studios movie stars Christine Woods (The Walking Dead) and Graham Sibley.

For the last decade, Guy (Graham Sibley) has worked a mentally and physically demanding 60-hour week, a soul-crushing daily grind that has frayed his nerves; while his wife Paige (Christine Woods), a free spirit with multiple fine arts degrees to her name, has spent their marriage chasing creative inspiration.

When the zombie apocalypse arrives, Guy is ecstatic: no more grueling work, no more monotony, no more hopeless future. He spends his days in idyllic splendor, living life in the moment… while Paige snaps into survival mode and takes on the role of pragmatist, figuring out how to secure their perimeter and stretch out their food supply, while following news reports for any glimmer of hope that they might be able to escape. The couple – in essence – has switched places. And in this new dynamic, all of the small fissures pressured beneath the surface of their relationship finally crack open, forcing them to deal not only with Armageddon, but with a potentially far more horrifying reality… each other.

Better Off Zed is available through SP Releasing on iTunes, Amazon, DirectTV, GooglePlay, Sony PSN and other outlets throughout the USA.

Producer-director Travis Stevens has commented: “Using horror to highlight the humour, tenderness, trust, and tragedy in an isolated relationship is an exciting challenge. Zed is constructed around the idea of elevating the normal to the supernormal by replacing the humdrum nature of everyday stresses with the exciting and terrifying possibility of being eaten by zombies. Playing on established horror tropes and twisting them into sometimes scary, sometimes funny situations drives both characters and audience down a what-would-you-do-if-it-were-you path.

After coming up with the story idea, I looked for a talented woman writer that was excited to work on this script. The concept came from such a strong organic place from me (I was that daily grinding working just wishing the world would end so I could get some rest) that I wanted to be sure that it was balanced against an equally strong female voice could lend weight and credibility to the relationship.”

I sell the dead

‘Never trust a corpse’

I Sell the Dead is a 2008 American comedy horror feature film about grave-robbing written, edited and directed by Irish-born Glenn McQuaid (V/H/S). The Glass Eye Pix movie stars Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Larry Fessenden and Angus Scrimm.

I sell the dead 2

Plot:

18th century justice has finally caught up with grave robbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes. With the spectre of the guillotine looming over him, young Blake confides in visiting clergyman Father Duffy, recounting fifteen years of adventure in the resurrection trade.

Blake’s tale leads from humble beginnings as a young boy stealing trinkets from corpses, to a partnership with seasoned ghoul Willie Grimes as they hunt creatures unwilling to accept their place in the ground…

I sell the dead 5

Reviews:

I Sell the Dead is not only one of the few horror comedies to really work, but also a fittingly tongue in cheek Hammer tribute. McQuaid shows himself to be a genuine genre talent, and it is rewarding indeed to see a director really put effort into recreating, rather than simply referencing some of the classics of old.” James Mudge, Beyond Hollywood.com

“The gothic horror film has become somewhat of a lost art, so it’s nice to see someone trying to resurrect it (so to speak). And while McQuaid pays homage to the classic movies with his shrouded moors and grave-robbers, the movie simply falls short.” Mike Long, DVD Sleuth

“If I have one criticism of the film it’s that I wished the two, when tussling with the undead, had a few more action scenes, but I assume that budget limitations killed the chances of this happening. This tale of buddy body-snatching is warm and witty and deserves high praise…” Darren Amner, Eye for Film

“As it stands, this delightful bit of gallows humor has its high points. It also suffers from occasional stumbles. Still, in a genre that sees more misfires than masterworks, I Sell the Dead is an excellent minor example of the latter. While it could have possibly been better, fans know it could be a whole helluva lot worse.” Bill Gibron, Pop Matters

“As far as the horror elements of the story are concerned they are centered around some of the stronger comedic moments of the film and do provide the bigger laughs. And there were some great laugh loud moments […] But I Sell the Dead is not without strong horror scenes and a good amount of blood letting.” Andrew Mack, Screen Anarchy

“You’ve basically got it all here. There’s genuine scares and genuine laughs. The makeup work on the monsters is quite impressive and frightening, and there’s even some bits of zombie gore to enjoy. The script is smart and clever, and filled with intentional anachronisms that only serve to make the film more unique than it already is.” B-Sol, The Vault of Horror

“First-time director Glenn McQuaid is especially enthusiastic about the duo’s rivals (a Burton-esque family of rogues dubbed “The House of Murphy”), but the editing rushes through the best bits and trips up Arthur and Willie’s partnership. Supporting hobbit turned Lost axiom Monaghan is too reserved anyway, and even Fessenden holds back from hork-in-yer-top-hat unsavoriness.” Nicolas Rapold, The Village Voice

Zombie Cheerleading Camp – USA, 2007

Zombie Cheerleading Camp is a 2007 American comedy horror feature film written, produced, edited and directed by Jon Fabris. The JAF Productions movie stars Jamie Anne Brown, Chris White and Nicole Lewis.

Plot:

When teenage boys stumble upon a nearby cheerleading camp, they think their wildest dreams have come true. What could be better than a group of beautiful girls who are bored, stuck in the woods, and ready to party? But something mysterious is changing the cheerleaders, one by one…

Reviews:

“This is the debut directorial from writer / director Jon Fabris who seems to have gotten a lot of his talent and shots from the small town of Raleigh, North Carolina… most of the actors are first timers or come from small resume backgrounds… however the film as a whole works for what it is. Part horror / part comedy Zombie Cheerleader Camp is a fun independent release.” Horror News

“When the highlight of your movie is a ridiculous two-minute fist-fight between a man and a non-animated, stuffed squirrel you may want to rethink your plans. Completionist genre fans with absolutely no other choices  might want to give this a try. Everybody else should steer clear.” More Brains

“I was shocked at how well directed the film proved to be and I’ve noticed this trend in the last few indie horrors I’ve reviewed. Whatever these movies lack in polish and scriptwriting, they make up for in using what they have on hand to entertain. The comedy is acceptable with a few laugh out loud scenes…” Brett H, Oh, the Horror!

Zombie 4 aka After Death – Italy, 1988

After Death – original title: Oltre la morte – is a 1988 Italian horror feature film directed by Claudio Fragasso [as Clyde Anderson] (Troll 2; Monster Dog) from a screenplay by Rossella Drudi. The Flora Film production stars Jeff Stryker [as Chuck Peyton], Candice Daly and Massimo Vanni [as Alex McBride].

Now best known as Zombie 4 (it was re-titled to make it appear to be the second sequel to Zombi 2 aka Zombie Flesh Eaters), the film has also been issued as Zombie Flesh Eaters 3.

Plot:

Researchers at a remote jungle island outpost discover the natives are practicing voodoo and black magic. After killing the local priest (James Sampson), a voodoo curse begins to raise the dead to feed on the living in retribution. The researchers on the island are killed by the newly risen zombies, except for Jenny (Candice Daly), the daughter of a scientist couple. She escapes, protected by an enchanted necklace charm given to her by her mother shortly before her death.

She returns years later as an adult with a group of mercenaries (Tommy, Dan, Rod and Rod’s girlfriend Louise) to try to uncover what happened to her parents. Shortly after arriving at the island their boat’s engine dies, stranding them. Meanwhile, elsewhere on the island a trio of hikers – Chuck, David, and Maddis ‘Mad’ – discover a cave, the same cave leading to the underground temple where the original curse was created. After accidentally reviving the curse, the dead once again return to kill any who trespass on their island…

Review:

Zombie 4 – originally released as After Death before it was co-opted into the series – saw Claudio Fragasso take the director’s reigns, while his wife Rossella Drudi provides the screenplay, proving herself every bit as incompetent as her other half when it came to writing efficient horror movies.

The plot is an incoherent mess and so full of holes that you’ll spend much of the film scratching your head in bewilderment, but it basically revolves around two groups of people who end up on an Island that is infested with zombies. One chap from a bunch of researchers reads from an Evil Dead-style ancient volume and resurrects the living dead – although they already seem quite spritely, attacking someone in the other group of bimbos and mercenaries. Inconsistencies like this crop up throughout the film, with Drudi and Fragasso presumably hoping that the frenetic action would stop the viewer from noticing.

Unfortunately, there is very little in the way of frenetic action. The zombies are, for the most part, so static that you could probably avoid them simply by walking at normal speed; the living characters, of course, all determinedly stay in one location rather than trying to get away from what looks like half a dozen walking dead.

There are a few novel twists – talking zombies, for one, and gay movie icon Jeff Stryker in a leading role for another. The film shows the influence of Lamberto Bava’s Demons in the early scenes – apparently tacked on to make the film longer. Fragasso and Drudi express their dislike of these scenes in the extras, but frankly, they are the best bit, ensuring it starts with a bang (it feels like a huge amount of plot exposition has been dumped before the film opens), and the first fifteen minutes or so are pretty fast- paced and outrageous. After that, unfortunately, things grind to a snail’s pace.

However, at least the zombies look like zombies, and now and again, the film briefly captures the atmosphere of Lucio Fulci’s Zombie Flesh Eaters. Al Festa – later to become a director himself, helming the stunningly terrible Fatal Frames – provides a decent Goblin-a-like score, and there are enough splattery moments to keep gorehounds more than satisfied.

It’s sad to think that the once-vibrant Italian exploitation industry fizzled out with tat like this – but for viewers who are not especially fussy and enjoy trashy, gory movies, Zombie 4 is not entirely without worth.

Reviews:
“Despite the director’s claims that the last third of the film was heavily cut, it’s still gruesome enough to please gorehounds. Given the film’s genesis and the reputation of its creators, it’s surprising that anything here is worth watching at all. That, at least, is a success of sorts.” Jim Harper, Italian Horror 1979 – 1994
“Not many people are likely to confuse After Death with a good movie, but zombie and splatter fans can easily get their jollies here. Faces are torn off in lingering detail, chest cavities are turned into impromptu puppeting devices,  bullet squibs burst twenty times wetter than any real gunshot… well, you get the idea.” Nathaniel Thompson, Mondo Digital
Zombie 4 reveals its tawdriness at nearly every turn […] the film stock looks like it was dragged out of a dusty warehouse, the lighting is paltry, and the zombies are a bit nondescript (outside of their ability to talk and move swiftly), especially when compared to the great designs of previous efforts.” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!
“Shot in the Philippines, (where life is cheap!), the movie has decent atmosphere and makes good use of its locations. It’s well-paced, features some solid action and more than respectable cinematography. This one works better than it really should, it is, if nothing else, quite entertaining.” Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop!
“While inherently silly, Fragasso’s film is nevertheless a gory, fast-paced zombie-action film, which strips away much of the fat – not to mention any intelligence – in its rudimentary storyline, but ably succeeds at mustering-up enough energy for an undemanding night’s entertainment.” Dennis Capicik Unpopped Cinema
” …a film so amateurish and imbecilic it makes the likes of RatMan and Patrick Lives Again look like veritable masterpieces. It should be acknowledged that, while this is dreadful stuff, it is at least better than Zombie Flesh Eaters 2, which stands as possibly one of the most boring films ever made. This is partly down to Fragasso, who directs with more vim than Bruno Mattei could ever manage.” Matt Blake, The Wild Eye

‘The Christmas spirit never dies’

Christmas with the Dead is a 2012 American  comedy horror feature film directed by T.L. Lankford [as Terrill Lee Lankford] from a screenplay by Keith Lansdale, based on a story by Joe R. Lansdale. The movie stars Damian Maffei, Brad Maule and Chet Williamson.

Plot:

In his quest to fulfil a promise made to his wife, Calvin sets out to right his wrongs and make it the best Christmas ever for his family. If only it weren’t June and the majority of the population, including his wife and daughter, hadn’t been turned into flesh-eating snappers by a mysterious atmospheric phenomenon, he’d be in pretty good shape.

Driven by guilt in a race against the apocalyptic clock, Calving teams up with G.M., a wily ex-garbage man turned undead slayer, as together they attempt to deck the halls during the most magical time of the year. It’s Christmas in June. And snappers be damned… The lights and decorations are going up.

Reviews:

“…clever, and quite funny, tongue-in-cheek humor abounds herein, from the snappy, knee-slapping dialog…the caustic, albeit laughable interaction of the characters…even to the zombies themselves, who shamble, jerk, spark and ‘pop’ about, as if they were uncontrollably plagued by perpetual body Tourette’s Syndrome…” Kevin Moye, Cinema Head Cheese

“Hilarious, scrappy, and even creepy!” Chris Alexander, Fangoria

” …comes to life with some snappy dialogue and a crafty sense of humor. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise as legendary scribe Joe R. Lansdale wrote the short story of the same name. Adapted for the (small) screen by his own spawn Keith Landsale, we finally have a shot-on-video, amateur acted, low-renter that is actually well-written, through no fault of its own.” Thomas T. ‘The darkness has risen’

The Dead and the Damned and the Darkness – aka The Dead and the Damned II – is a 2014 science fiction horror feature film written, produced, edited, photographed and directed by Rene Perez (It Hungers; Playing with Dolls franchise; The Burning Dead; et al). The movie stars Robert Tweten, Iren Levy, John J. Welsh, Richard Tyson and Raven Lexy.

The film is a loose sequel to Perez’ The Dead and the Damned (2010)

Plot:

Lieutenant Colonel Sawyer (Robert Tweten) went to war against a virulent plague, in Europe and Africa. Returning home, he finds his wife dead and his daughter is missing. He decides to give his deceased wife a burial in the ocean.

However, he must first pass through a quarantined infected zone and fight hordes of zombies. Along the way, he rescues a deaf woman and a hobo, along with some other survivors…

Reviews:

” …the villains are minimized to just the mutants and one other minor character. These characters bring some tension, but very little authentic conflict. Some of the best conflict can come from a hero overcoming exterior challenges, not just interior ones. The lack of a villain really dampened the possibility of a satisfying climax.” 28 Days Later Analysis

“Some of the performances are decent for a low-budget film, and the production looks a little better than something shot on a backstage set. There’s a nice splashing of gore to wet the audience, and if you’re able to forgive some shoddy costuming […], then there’s a passable ministration to the film.” Dread Central

“I really like that it was explained how the zombies came about and why the zombies slowdown. The zombies/mutants slowed down when they were starving/decomposing – when fully fed; they can become pretty fast. The main characters were explained and introduced nicely.” Hell Horror

“These zombies (or mutants) are a nice combination of the slow Romero zombies and the fast ones from Return of the Living Dead and other similar films. It is explained at one point that they are fast once they turn into zombies but slow down after they start to really decompose or are starving, which I thought was a nice touch.” Horror News

‘Flowers. Candy… Hearts!’

Valentine DayZ is a 2018 science fiction horror feature film written and directed by Mark Allen Michaels (The Fiancé; Mind Rage) and produced by Staci Layne Wilson (Fetish Factory) and Kate Rees Davies (Altered Perception). The movie stars Dallas Valdez, Carrie Keagan, Robert Allen Mukes and Diane Ayala Goldner.

dallas-valdez-zombie-valentine-dayz-2017-horror-movie

Plot:

Middle-aged Max and Sara meet and fall for each other in Palm Springs, but their love story is cut short due to a sudden zombie outbreak. Max is not as mild-mannered as he appears, and has a history involving government-sanctioned hits. Unfortunately, one zombie he isn’t able to kill is his darling Sara…

Reviews:

“It is a very ambitious task to take on a zombie film. It is a genre so saturated that standing out becomes incredibly difficult. Valentine DayZ fell short of that goal and remains one of the countless other zombie stories out there waiting for someone to notice them… like a single person on Valentine’s Day.” Horror Buzz

” …there are some new ideas as well – like some of the zombies being “active” only in the sunlight, and some of them eventually “coming back” to being people. Basically, Valentine DayZ is a love story in the center of the zombie outbreak. In short, the film sparks quite a few ideas that could’ve been “pushed a bit further”. BZ Films

Go Goa Gone is a 2013 Indian comedy horror feature film directed by Krishna D.K. and Raj Nidimoru from a screenplay co-written with Sita Menon. The Illuminati production stars Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari, Puja Gupta and Hardik Malaviya.

Plot:

A group of friends, just looking to have a good time in a rave party on a remote island in Goa, find out that the island is infested with zombies…

Reviews:

“Das and Khemu have a great rapport and do their best to carry the film. Tiwari’s character seems shoehorned in to make self-aware jokes about being the friend who always gets killed first in horror films. Pooja Gupta fits in better as Luv’s new love interest, Luna. Her presence sparks some amusing conflict between Luv and Hardik, as they compete over her in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.” Access Bollywood

The very difficult balance of making a Bollywood zombie film is handled with extraordinary aplomb by Raj & DK who take the opportunity to create something fresh out of a genre that feels like it has run its course in the west […] While the film is great, it is so different that audiences just may not know what to do with it.” J Hurtado, Screen Anarchy

” …works best in its earliest stages when it’s merely a comedy dependent upon rapid-fire dialogue and word play. Once the reanimated corpses start piling up (aided by fairly shoddy make-up and CGI), it quickly becomes monotonous and repetitive — though at least there’s colorful cinematography and snappy music keep things lively.” Michael Smith, White City Cinema

Go Goa Gone is a pleasant watch, and despite the innumerable scenes depicting flesh and gore, doesn’t leave one with an urge to vomit. The dialogues are witty and are mostly responsible for invoking a laugh. Sense, logic and sensibility be damned – go ‘keel dead peepal’!” Ananya Bhattacharya, Zee News

A scene from Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Army of the Dead is a 2020 American action horror feature film directed by Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeWatchmen; Sucker PunchDawn of the Dead, 2004) from a screenplay by Joby Harold.

The movie, which is already in pre-production, is being brought to the screen by Snyder with his partner and wife, Deborah, via their newly rebranded production company, Stone Quarry. Wesley Coller is also producing.

Plot:

Amidst a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Development:

The Netflix-backed movie will mark Snyder’s return to directing after a family tragedy meant that he left Justice League in 2017, with Joss Whedon doing reshoots and finishing post-production. According to industry insiders, Netflix specifically identified the zombie project and sought it out from previous owners Warner Bros., which might set a precedent for the studio selling other projects to the online streaming service.

In an interview in The Hollywood Reporter Snyder stated: “I love to honour canon and the works of art, but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself though a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware — but not in a wink-to-the-camera way — balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this].”

He added: “I love big action, I love big sequences. My movie brain starts clicking around and I was like, ‘We need to be shooting this now!’ Constructing these sequences really fired me up.”

Detention of the Dead – USA, 2012

‘When there is no more room in Hell the dead go to detention’

Detention of the Dead is a 2012 American comedy horror feature film directed by Alex Craig Mann from a screenplay co-written with Rob Rinow, based on the latter’s stage play. The Gala Films production stars Jacob Zachar, Alexa Nikolas, Christa B. Allen, Jayson Blair and Justin Chon.

Plot:

A group of teenagers trapped in detention fight for survival after their classmates turn into a ravenous zombie horde. Can a stoner, a jock, a bully, a goth, and a nerd put aside their differences for one night to take on the undead? Will they live to see the morning?

Reviews:

“The jokes are on the juvenile scale of the spectrum […] And, there are fart jokes, so the comedy is fairly hit and miss. This reviewer enjoyed the zombie rat in the ducts, but the laughs are fairly sparse. The plot is a little thin, overall.” Michael Allen, 28 Days Later Analysis

Detention of the Dead soon grows tiring, unable to congeal as a formidable braiding of ugliness and teen vulnerability. There’s a nice breezy quality of awareness and panic communicated by the eager cast, but the picture isn’t managed to satisfaction, fumbling jokes, breaking up soaring soundtrack cues, and generally leaning on influences instead of developing a personality of its own.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com

“There are some very entertaining moments, including character Ash’s reversion to his Asian language as he angrily kills a zombie, and Ash’s attempts to free a zombie arm from character Eddie’s crotch. The cast of characters, whether intentionally or not, are broad and bland high school movie archetypes, many of whom don’t have much depth to them.” Felix Vasquez, Cinema Crazed

“There’s some decent jokes, a few novel character turns, and a wealth of welcome low budget atmosphere on display. But unlike some homemade horror films, Detention pretends to be professional, when it’s really just a fan-made front. Mann understands what he wants to offer. Unfortunately, some in the audience won’t like what he has to give.” Bill Gibron, DVD Talk

” …the action never feels slow, even when very little is happening. The film tends to aspire to be something greater than it is, which is inevitable when you deliver a tagline like The Breakfast Club meets Shaun of the Dead, but it manages to be a solid entry into the zombie genre.” The Film Reel

“With makeup and gore effects that could be bested by moderately gifted fanboys at a well equipped high school, Detention never manages a single scare — a failing that would be forgivable if only it were making us laugh.” John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter

“Trailing intestines look like links of undercooked butchers’ sausages, while the zombies’ bloodied faces recall the survivors of a State Fair pie-eating contest rather than monsters’ raging lust for human flesh. And the cutting is slack, especially in the dialogue, when pauses at the end of every line suggest the actors are waiting for an audience’s response.” Lesley Smith, Pop Matters

“If you don’t like light-hearted jabs, coming-of-age quirks, zero atmospheric darkness, societal commentary, and plot material succeeding that probably shouldn’t, then this film might feel like you’re actually stuck in detention, forced to sit silently until the credits roll.” Matt Donato, We Got This Covered

Cast and characters:

  • Jacob Zachar … Eddie – The Hive
  • Alexa Nikolas … Willow
  • Christa B. Allen … Janet
  • Jayson Blair … Brad
  • Justin Chon … Ash
  • Max Adler … Jimmy
  • Joseph Porter … Mark

‘A darkness looms over the kingdom’

Rampant – original title: Chang-gwol aka 창궐 – is a 2018 South Korean period action zombie feature film directed by Kim Sung-hoon from a screenplay written by Hwang Jo-yoon. The movie stars Hyun Bin, Jang Dong-gun and Eui-sung Kim.

Plot:

A hero named Lee Chung (Hyun Bin) fights against “Night Demons” to save the Joseon nation. Lee Chung is the son of the king, and the greatest martial artist in the world. Although he is given to the Qing empire as a political hostage, he returns home upon hearing that his brother, the Crown Prince Lee Young (Kim Tae-woo), has taken his own life.

With the nightmarish monsters plaguing the country and the minister of military Kim Ja-joon (Jang Dong-gun) plotting to overthrow the dynasty, Prince Lee Chung (Hyun Bin) will be fighting them alongside archer Deok-hee (Lee Sun-bin) and others…

Reviews:

Rampant is a highly compelling and entertaining movie which will leave fans of zombie movies and fans of historical movies highly pleased.” Maria Georgiou, Asian Movie Pulse

“When the zombies attack in earnest, Kim Sang-hoon goes big, creating huge, inspired centerpiece sequences that combine zombie horror with martial arts sword play. This is movie magic at its finest. Yet, the awakening of the Prince’s sense of responsibility and idealism is also pretty stirring stuff.” Joe Bendel, J.B. Spins

Rampant manages light entertainment during its fairly predictable two hour Joseon zombie romp. Seeing zombies lay waste to the royal palace while wearing hanboks (traditional Korean dress) and other traditional Korean garb is quite pleasing to the eye for originality sake. But Rampant is merely a surface level kind of movie…” Tyler Colosimo, The Movie Beat

“While slick and polished, Rampant feels reluctant to commit fully to the intriguing originality of its premise. It excels neither as a zombie film, nor a throne-room drama, while its clumsy subtext lacks any real bite.” James Marsh, South China Morning Post

Rampant has a promising premise, but it is a bland film that is marred by a predictable plot and cardboard characters. However, the movie much to the satisfaction of fans of zombie movies, they are quick, strong and cruel, not to mention creepy. It also succeeded in giving audiences spectacular sword-fight sequences and some truly beautiful cinematography.” Shim Sun-ah, Yonhap News Agency

Technical credits:

121 minutes

Release:

Rampant was released on October 25, 2018.

Well Go USA is releasing Rampant on Blu-ray and DVD on February 26, 2019.

Little Monsters is a 2019 Australian-British-American comedy horror feature film written and directed by Abe Forsythe. The movie stars Lupita Nyong’oJosh Gad, Stephen Peacocke and Nadia Townsend.

Plot:

A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies

Reviews:

” …this is a pretty charming little zombie comedy and while I’m not sure a theatrical run is the best bet for it, it’ll for sure be a must-watch once it hits Hulu, with it being warm-hearted enough to connect with a broad audience. It’s not terribly original but it’s well-done and quite charming.” Chris Bumbray, Arrow in the Head

“For anyone who has felt like the zombie subgenre is well-mined cinematic territory with no real surprises left to be found, Forsythe is here to prove with Little Monsters that there is still a ton of fun to be found when you unleash a multitude of flesh-eaters upon a children’s petting zoo.” Heather Wixson, Daily Dead

“The concept of the undead versus school teachers is midnight movie madness, yet the film is every bit as warm as a Saturday morning cartoon. With the right outlook and guiding hand, nothing need be scary, and the mundane (or monstrous) can be a perfect escape.” David Crow, Den of Geek!

“Seriously, Little Monsters was a slapstick, tongue-in-cheek, zombie comedy that fulfilled all of its obligations and then some. Gut-busting humor, stomach-churning gore, and a story that pays of and how.” Norman Gidney, Horror Buzz

“Forsythe also slyly stages a number of adorably loopy songs that will leave jaded genre fans with big goofy smiles, in spite of themselves. The only real annoyance in Little Monsters is the negative portrayal of the U.S. military. Seriously, if a zombie apocalypse ever broke out, Forsythe would be praying for the U.S. Marines to come riding in.” Joe Bendel, J.B. Spins

” …a reasonably clever premise for a Night of the Living Dead update, but unfortunately, Little Monsters never pushes past that premise. Writer/director Abe Forsythe has about three comic notions (most notably, that it’s funny to say wildly inappropriate things around five-year-olds–that one gets a real workout) and he just keeps circulating them…” Jason Bailey, The Playlist

“Gad is in full-blown Gad Mode, but the awfulness of his character is intentional this time. Ultimately, Little Monsters may not live up to the Romero/Jackson films that influenced it, but it’s a reasonably enjoyable zombie flick.” Brian Tellerico, RogerEbert.com

Little Monsters is non-stop laughs, featuring Taylor Swift songs, nursery rhymes and oh yeah, bloodthirsty zombies. This is the most insanely horrifying and hilarious film of Sundance.” Ashley Menzel, We Live Entertainment

Parts of the Family is a 2003 Belgian-American comedy horror feature film directed by Léon Paul De Bruyn (Maniac Nurses) from a screenplay by John Idem and Liam Bradley. The Idep Bvpa-Troma Entertainment production was co-produced by Johan Vandewoestijne (PurgatoryRabid Grannies and director of Laundry Man; Lucker the Necrophagous) and stars Cecilia Bergqvist, Bob Dougherty and Leo Franquet.
Plot:

Beyond the front door of an old, decrepit house a horrible and tragic past is buried. One night a family of four were brutally hacked to pieces. The only survivor is the young and beautiful housekeeper, Ella. When she steps out of the house one day, she has no idea that she is about to be snatched by failed bank robber Jason Goodis. The latter, however, could not have imagined that the innocent hostage he is dragging back inside, has an unquenchable thirst for blood!

Reviews:

” …it’s the overall tone that finally fails Parts of the Family. At 86 minutes, this movie is still too long, with more pointless scenes of people screaming and moaning than moments of necessary exposition. Flashbacks happen at the most inopportune times […] Shrill, stupid and sloppily put together, Parts of the Family is a failure.” Bill Gibron, DVD Talk

“This is a movie so terrible and nonsensical, even Troma hated it and decided to MST3K their own movie by re-editing it with self-aware mocking commentary, silly noises and farts, gratuitous cannibal lesbians, fat men and nudity.” The Worldwide Celluloid Massacre
