Clash of the Dead – UK, 2015

‘After 100 years, they have risen.’

Clash of the Dead – aka World War Dead: Rise of the Fallen – is a 2015 British zombie horror film written and directed by Freddie Hutton-Mills and Bart Ruspoli (Cryptic; Devil’s Playground). The Atomic Level Films production stars Ray Panthaki, Wendy Glenn and Kacey Barnfield.

To celebrate the centenary of WW1, a television documentary team travels to the Somme in France to put together a ratings smash about new mysteries relating to the famous battle.

However, what they unearth is far from a new story of those that died 100 years ago – but an army of the undead and a brand new war…

Reviews:

“The first third is where it finds most success, establishing some great characters […] The film’s descent into a rather generic stalk n’ slash orientated final third is one area that disappoints, but in general this is one zombie flick that converts your initial groan of reluctance into a harrumph of re-evaluation.” Dave Wain, The Schlock Pit

“Visiting the site of the Battle of the Somme, the filmmakers at least seem like they had a good holiday whilst filming. There’s no real build-up of tension here and very few set-ups for later on. Once the crew discover the zombie army, it’s purely by-the-book found footage numbers for the remainder of the running time.” Popcorn Pictures

” …poorly lit scenes where the camera flickers and shakes without focusing on anything isn’t terrifying, scary or moody – it’s irritating and lazy, offering nothing and hammering home the fact that the film is totally devoid of anything actually worth looking at as there are no decent kills to speak of.” Gary Collinson, Flickering Myth

” …it’s difficult to feel empathy with the characters by the end of the film. You don’t feel their trauma or even their grief-stricken panic because of the irritating camera movements. And this is topped by a mediocre explanation of the curse and what they should do to end it.” Simret Cheema-Innis, Horror Talk

“Even if we are too set aside the found footage inconsistencies, the film does not fair well. What starts as a good story quickly unravels due to a myriad of factors spanning from cinematographic direction and nonsensical plot elements, to poor pacing and unbalanced acting.” Michael Steinberg, Found Footage Critic

” When you think “found footage” horror flicks you expect some unsteady camera angles and framing, but here things become so unstable it is barely watchable. Camera glitches flash in and out far too often that at times a single image cannot even be decoded.” Michelle Moore, Close-Up Film

‘The end is high’

Bong of the Living Dead is a 2017 comedy horror film directed by Max Groah from a screenplay co-written with Tim Mayo (short: Never Say Dead). It stars Tiffany Arnold, Eric Boso, and Daniel Alan Kiely.

The lifelong dreams of a group of friends and zombie movie buffs come true. As their provisions run low, reality begins to set in and they realize that the zombie apocalypse isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…

Reviews:

“The makeup is reminiscent of Evil Dead 2 and using Columbus, OH as a backdrop for the film allows the ‘it could happen anywhere’ effect to work. The film doesn’t try to be something it’s not. They knew their audience and gave them what they wanted.”Adam Holtzapfel, East Coast Horror Group

Bong of the Living Dead is a shaggy, scrappy, loose and lively zombie comedy with a charm all its own. It’s reliably fun and finds hidden gems of comedy from its deep supporting cast of oddballs. The main characters do fine work pushing at the boundaries of their stock archetypes, with Kiely as the wild man standout.” Nate Zoebl, Psycho Drive-In

‘It grows on you’

Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies – formerly Kudzu Zombies – is a 2017 American science fiction horror directed by Mark Newton (City of Darkness) from a screenplay by Christian Hokenson, based on a storyline by Stephan Stromer and Daniel Wood; it stars Kaitlin Mesh, Miles Doleac, Michael Joiner, and Wyntergrace Williams.

Lonnie, a crop duster pilot, must lead a mismatched group of survivors to escape the deadly zombie horde after an experimental chemical, intended to control the invasive Kudzu vine, transforms the citizens of Charleston, Mississippi, into zombies…

The film was released by Gravitas Ventures on March 13, 2018, via Blu-ray, DVD and digital VOD. The filmmakers have also released a computer game, a comic book and a soundtrack tie-ins.

Reviews:

“At its core, Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies recalls the simple joy of games of chase, play fighting and messy destruction, the light-hearted anarchy that makes films like this fun. By not trying to be bigger or faster or louder or smarter, it breathes fresh life into the undead, and though it could under no circumstances be described as high quality, many genre fans will find it a delight from start to finish.” Jennie Kermode, Eye for Film

“This film knows what it is. It’s not trying to be overly-political or trying to tear to shreds so many societal norms (a la the best of Romero’s zombie films). And it doesn’t rely on the smartest of story-telling or the best of performances or the most convincing effects. But dammit, it’s a rip-roaring, zombie-munching good time at the movies.” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News

Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies is very much an indie, zombie film. Shot for a pittance, the filmmakers have brought a fun feature to the screen. There are a lot of jokes to lighten the mood. Meanwhile, there are all sorts of explosions and gunfire going off, to hold action fans’ attention. The make-up is also gory and well done.” Michael Allen, 28 Days Later Analysis

Texas farmers turn into zombies when they become infected by an energy field from outer space. The residents must escape before an overeager general can convince the President to drop a nuclear bomb on the rural town…

Reviews:

Bloodsuckers from Outer Space could be one of the kings of low budget B-Movies […] has loads of odd but extremely funny lines of dialogue. It’s the kind of stuff that you can’t believe someone actually wrote down and then expected an actor to memorize.” Kryten Syxx, Dread Central

” …a lot like the following year’s Return of the Living Dead, except that it isn’t funny or exciting.” Peter Dendle, The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia, 2001

Buy: Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca

” …the acting and make-up effects are so dreadful, and the writing so amateurish, that there are several scenes and characters that will draw out a smile. At least everyone present was trying and it shows. The production as a whole gets an A+ for effort but a C- for presentation.” Jason McElreath, DVD Drive-In

Bloodsuckers from Outer Space isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s fun and contains sporadic moments of (mostly) intentional greatness. There are far worse ways to kill a six-pack and an hour and 19 minutes. At the very least the new wave theme song is pretty choice and there are remarkably few fart jokes…” Travis Box, Dallas Observer

The Night Eats the World is a 2018 French horror film directed by Dominique Rocher from a screenplay co-written with Jérémie Guez and Guillaume Lemans, based on Pit Agarmen’s novel La nuit a dévoré le monde. The film stars Anders Danielsen Lie, Dennis Lavant and Golshifteh Farahani.

Sam wakes one morning to find himself living in a nightmare: an army of zombies have invaded the streets of Paris and he the lone survivor. While contemplating his bleak future and how to survive, he learns he may not be alone after all…

Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired North American rights for the film, which was shot in both French and English versions. Meanwhile, the Tribeca Film Festival is screening the French version with subs.

Reviews:

” …the film is technically very proficient — kudos to production designer Sidney Dubois for artfully messing up all those fabulous Paris apartments — and has the gall to try something outside the known confines of the genre. Yet it ultimately feels too anticlimactic and lethargic.” Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter

“Rocher’s approach is admittedly more stylish and cerebral than many zombie films, but he still embraces the core principles of the genre. Rocher also composes some eerie visuals of the de-populated Parisian neighborhood and the ferocious swarms of zombie masses. Despite a relative paucity of gore, Walking Dead fans should be able to relate and approve.” Joe Bendel, J.B. Spins

In the distant future, man’s greatest enemy is one another as the flesh-eating undead wages war against the living! A Marine platoon is ambushed during a mission, leaving only three soldiers alive to fend off the growing army of the living dead.

En route to their pickup point, the platoon come across an abandoned house with three mysterious women hiding inside. If they can make it through the night, they’re home free… or so they think, because someone is hiding a dark secret that may alter the course of this gore-drenched war…

Reviews:

” …has a fair few enjoyable twists and ideas in it. A perfect Sunday morning hangover movie; its unchallenging, freewheelin’ approach makes it fun and easy viewing.” Blood Capsules

“The acting is a bit shaky, and delivered sarcastically at times when the character is seemingly trying to be serious. Bowker’s Platoon of the Dead has not as much gore as most zombie flicks contain, and the low budget gross-out props are put together quickly but do kind of get the point across of what exactly is coming out of a zombie or human body.” Joanna Rose, HorrorNews.net

“The soundtrack is bad, actually it’s pretty annoying. For a zombie film there ain’t many zombies… There is virtually no gore, the special FX are a joke, there are some practical FX and a few digital visual effects, such as laser fire and disintegrating bodies.” Independent Flicks

Platoon of the Dead has a painful amateurism on almost every level. The film feels exactly like it was shot in and around someone’s house […] a film that avoids almost every opportunity for any kind of makeup effects, which are almost requisite for any effort setting out to be a zombie film.” Richard Scheib, Moria

‘Don’t open the door’

The Dead House – aka Dead House and original title Beautiful People – is a 2013 Italian home invasion horror feature film directed by Amerigo Brini from a screenplay by Andrea Cavaletto (Poe 4: The Black Cat; Doll Syndrome; Hidden in the Woods). The Doghouse Picture production stars Danny Cutler, David White, Kate Marie Davies and Andrea Pascali.

The tables are turned on a group of brutal thieves during a home invasion. Hidden in the basement they find the remains of secret viral lab experiments gone savagely wrong.

Now they must escape before they are infected with a new strain of virus that turns its victims into mutated psychopaths…

Reviews:

With its quick 70 minute running time, fast paced action and rough dialogue, it all works. The performances are mostly solid, and the practical monster/ blood and gore effects are as good as any European film in the genre […] There are some slightly idiotic plot points and poor decisions that get made, and no one really redeems themselves by the end.” Adam the Movie God

“As it stands, Beautiful People is quite unique, and in an era of unnecessary remakes and endless takes on zombies – that’s commendable. The subject matter ain’t for everyone (some of you will be offended by it), but it’s well worth a watch for those of you with iron clad stomachs and open minds.” Horror News

Beautiful People may be uneven, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. This is not a traditional zombie flick. In fact, I urge you to think twice if you are easily offended. The home invasion aspect of the film is particularly brutal and intense.” Luke Rodriguez, Modern Horrors

“As it is, this film offers lots of psychological torture, without the introduction of virtue. So, this viewer began to feel dread as each scene led to more and more brutality. It would have been better to have had some light at the end of the tunnel. In the end, Beautiful People offers lots of great make-up effects, but very little hope to overcome so much evil.” Michael Allen, 28 Days Later Analysis

‘Kill or be killed’

Eyes of the Dead – aka 6:15 – is a 2015 American horror feature film written, directed by and starring Ben Samuels (Kantemir). The Red Hound Films movie co-stars Rosebud Baker, Matt Riker, Montana Marks (Camp Dread), and Amy Rutledge (Neighbour).

Eddie and Carla, an emotionally troubled couple, struggle to survive with their friends after a deadly outbreak turns farmhands into ravenous zombies.

The POV film is released on digital VOD platforms on August 24, 2018, via Blue Fox Entertainment.

Reviews:

“Writer/director Ben Samuels and company earn accolades for an inventive approach to a twice-told and then some tale, and bonus points for a spectacular practical effect of conjoined zombie piglets.  But actors inexperienced for the task at hand coupled with uneventful act two interludes make 6:15 a more routine zombie film than its premise promises.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

“On a positive note, the gore effects are frankly pretty spectacular […] You will find a few good scares, but certainly nothing to keep you up at night. Initially, I will say that the filmmakers eked out a bit of unease and dread (in the cornfields), but the terrible depiction of the government agencies (all throughout the film) was an annoying distraction.” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News

Eat Me! is a 2009 American comedy horror feature film directed by directed by Katie Carman from a screenplay by Elizabeth Lee who also stars. The Cold Hands Productions movie also stars Jun Naito, Ivy Hong, and Chesley Calloway.

A Brooklyn garage band, General Malacarne, survives a radioactive event and have to battle against zombies to what they believe is the safe haven of Long Island…

Reviews:

” …the make-up jobs on the zombies seemed to vary quite a bit, some looked great and others were lacking. The continuity of the film is fairly simple; the group makes decisions based on (stoner) logic and reason for the most part.  I felt the film never really climaxed and that we were just dragged though step by step until they came to a poor conceived resolution.” Dano Casas, Buy Zombie

“There are some genuinely creepy and tense moments as well as some very original ideas. Acting is good all round with solid characters who are neither interchangeable nor obnoxious. Overall the film looks a lot better than its minuscule budget would suggest…” Trevor Menham, Full on Fear

Eat Me! is a film made by people who want to make films, who possess the drive and motivation just to go out and get started and that must be admired. Slightly rough around the edges and in need of a little polish this is still a film that will entertain right up until the strangely abrupt ending. John Townsend, The Horror Asylum

“For its inventiveness, Calloway’s great performance, and the commendable production values, Eat Me! is a zombie comedy movie that I hope finds an audience. It may not satisfy your hunger for a big, gory zombie spectacle, but it has a lot going for it to satisfy your other zombie cravings.” Aaron Allen, The Zed Word

The movie features stories directed by Evan Hughes, Sid Zanforlin, Luke Guidici, Carl Timms, Patrick Longstreth, Timothy J. Richardson, Martyn Pick and Nick Spooner.

Featuring a collection of horror stories involving cannibals, zombies “and other funny creatures”, it includes an awkward dinner with an ancient creature in ‘The Call of Charlie’ and a rightfully justified fear of basements in ‘Time to Eat.’

The stories feature Brooke Smith (Bates MotelThe Silence of the Lambs), Harry Sinclair (Lord of the Rings), Madalina Bellariu Ion and Kristin Slaysman.

Blood Clots premiered on Vimeo and Amazon on August 3, 2018.

Endzeit – Germany, 2018

Endzeit (“Ever After”) is a 2018 German horror feature film directed by Carolina Hellsgård from a screenplay by Olivia Vieweg, based on her comic book. The movie stars Gro Swantje Kohlhof, Maja Lehrer, Trine Dyrholm and Yûho Yamashita.

Two years after a viral zombie epidemic has left only two German cities uninfected, twenty-two year-old Vivi (Gro Swantje Kohlhof) and twenty-six year-old Eva (Maja Lehrer) flee the brutal existence in Weimar and hop an automated train for the other supposed safe haven, Jena.

Unfortunately, the train unexpectedly stops mid-trip, leaving Vivi and Eva to reluctantly forge a bond as they make their way across a beautiful but zombified countryside in Thuringia (“the green heart of Germany”), towards the city and salvation at the other end of the line.

Background:

Endzeit is a maximalistic female buddy movie set in the German apocalypse,” says director Hellsgård. “It depicts the friendship of two young women, who are forced to emancipate themselves in order to survive. In the end a kind of love arises, not only to each other but to the fantastic nature surrounding them.

But Hellsgård’s Endzeit – based on the feminist zombie comic by Olivia Vieweg (who also wrote the script) – asks a question rarely asked in the zombie genre, “Why did this happen?” Eva, who rejects her role of state-sanctioned murderer, and Vivi, who clings to the notion of finding her missing little sister, become allies by necessity. And, in the heart of the wilderness, they discover doomsday is undergoing a strange evolution.

Some of the flesh-eating zombies have foliage apparently growing out of their faces.
